Exceptionally Preserved Fossilized Remains Of 1 Billion-Year-Old Cells Discovered

Fossils are rare things. Only a fraction of organisms get turned into stone. The vast majority of fossilized remains are hard tissues like bones, so finding things from the “squishy” bits of an organism is very unlikely. An even smaller fraction of fossils are from microscopic organisms. Given all this, a group of researchers have truly hit jackpot: the discovery of microfossils that hold the remains of ancient single-cell organisms that were alive roughly 1 billion years ago, preserved to such an incredible degree you can see the distinct cellular structures inside. As reported in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers analyzed material from the Cailleach Head Formation, in western Scotland. A billion years ago, this region was the bottom …

Neanderthal DNA Found In The Literal Center Of Our Chromosomes

Despite going extinct tens of thousands of years ago, Neanderthals’ influence on humans remains. Every modern human has DNA inherited from when our ancestors mated with this other species of hominid, although some have more than others. The presence of these genes is no longer surprising, but now researchers have found a peculiar location for some of this genetic material: centromeres. Centromeres are in the middle of chromosomes, where the “pinched-in” bit gives chromosomes their traditional X-shape. These regions are pulled apart when cells divide, so defects can occur during the process, which can lead to cancer, among others. Since centromeres contain many repeating features, they are difficult to map in detail. Despite these difficulties, the researchers decided to track haplotypes within them. These are a group …

Nirvana’s 20 greatest songs ranked!

Its 30 years since the release of the Seattle bands debut album, Bleach. Over the rest of their short career, Kurt Cobain and co would belt out a torrent of classics 20. Blew (1989) Along with Mudhoneys Sweet Young Thing Aint Sweet No More, Nirvanas second single defined the initial sound of grunge: deeply unfashionable early-70s heavy rock refracted through a punk lens, where sludgy riffs met Ramones-ish third wall breaking (here is another word that rhymes with shame) and a coda so repetitious it sounded as if the record were stuck. 19. Territorial Pissings (1991) An excoriation of machismo and sexism, Nirvana tended to launch into the Hsker D-ish Territorial Pissings on TV shows where they were expected to …

Forgive Yourself For Falling In Love With The Wrong Person

Becky Curl Updated June 25, 2019 By Lisa Fotios It’s okay. When was the last time you told yourself that and believed it? I hope today you really can believe it. You swore this time it was all going to be different. Something about them just felt right. You just knew that this had to be what everyone else was always talking about. This had to be how it felt when you finally found “the one.” How could you not fall in love with someone promising you all of these forevers? What type of person talks about building a future with you when they knew all along that was not what they wanted? You were never what they truly wanted. But for …

A Reminder To Love Yourself Unconditionally, Flaws and All

Gwen Jones Updated June 21, 2019 By Jeff Isy We human beings are fans of giving out love but abandoning the person who needs our love the most—ourselves. And yes, I’m sure you’re already cringing, but please stick with me. For me, this year has been a huge journey of self-acceptance and self-love, two areas that tie in together but nevertheless two victims that have always sat on the backburner. While I’ve been preaching acceptance, love and care of one’s self for over a year now, I’d be lying if I said I was a receiver of the advice I give out. I use “journey” lightly, as I believe self-improvement is a lifelong journey that doesn’t necessarily lead to a …
