Michael Flynn fires lawyers who cut plea deal with Mueller

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, has fired his lawyers who arranged a 2017 plea deal that helped set the tone for others to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Flynn, who continues to delay his sentencing after a disastrous court hearing last December and subsequent developments that put the spotlight on the Covington & Burling law firm, was one of the Mueller’s investigations earliest and important cooperators. Flynn admitted in December 2017 to lying to the FBI while they interviewed him in the White House in January 2017 about discussing foreign policy with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and about his lobbying for Turkey. Once he agreed to help Mueller, the fired Trump adviser sat …

3 myths about Mexico and migration, debunked

(CNN)US President Donald Trump says Mexico isn’t doing enough to stop immigration — and he’s threatening to saddle Mexican goods with tariffs as result. Reality: Deportations from Mexico have been on the rise in recent months, and the country has launched several new efforts in response to the situation. The Most Unattractive Thing You Can Do Is Lie To Me

Holly Riordan Updated June 4, 2019 By Max Ducourneau I don’t care if you’re lying to me because you think it’s for my own good. I don’t care if you’re lying to me because it’s easier than sitting down and explaining a long, elaborate truth. I don’t care if you’re lying to me to save us from an unneeded argument. I don’t care if you’re lying to me to save your own ass. The reason behind your lie doesn’t make a difference. I want the raw, honest truth. Always. I want you to be honest with me, even if it hurts my feelings. I want you to be honest with me, even if it makes you look bad. I want …

The Average American Consumes More Than 74,000 Microplastics A Year

The average American consumes 1,314,000 calories, 152 pounds of sugar – and more than 74,000 microplastic particles every year. This is according to Canadian researchers, who – writing in Environmental Science & Technology – have reviewed 26 studies analyzing the number of microplastics found in fish, shellfish, added sugars, salts, alcohol, tap or bottled water, and air. (Some foods were not included simply due to a lack of data.) The aim: to find out how much of the stuff we are, on average, consuming, using the recommended American dietary guidelines as a basis. So, first things first. What is microplastic? Microplastics are micro-sized pieces of plastic derived from the degradation of larger plastic products, among other sources. Their ubiquity is so widespread, …

Scientists Decode Genome Of Plague-Causing Bacteria That Decimated Medieval Europe

Yersinia pestis is the bacterium responsible for the first plague pandemic (and all plague pandemics since) – the Justinian Plague of 541 to 750 CE. This public health crisis wiped out close to 100 million people in Asia, Africa, and Europe in the first five years alone. Now, an international team of researchers writing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and led by the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History have analyzed the remains of 21 victims and reconstructed eight plague genomes to find out the bacteria evolved and the impact it had on Early Middle Age Europe.  The Justinian Plague – named after Justinian I, ruler of the Eastern Roman (or, Byzantine) Empire – kicked off in 541 CE. Following an outbreak …

Beto O’Rourke Wants To Increase Voter Registration. But Can It Work?

A new plan from Democratic presidential candidate voter registration by 50 million people not registeredchoice that his views on voting rights were shaped by his home state’s dismal voter turnout ranking of 50th before the 2018 election, when he Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). He said the ranking was in part due to constituents being “drawn out” of districts, referencing a that found that legislators had drawn districts discriminatorily based on race or ethnicity.   “If we have in fact drawn people out and gotten to really terrible levels of voter participation, then the answer to that has to be drawing people in,” he said. O’Rourke’s plan would automatically register voters electronically when they “do business with a government office,” a …

MPs’ staff press Corbyn on harassment action

No reason was given at the time for his suspension from his communications role in Mr Corbyn’s office. On Sunday, newspaper reports suggested that a female MP had raised concerns with Mr Corbyn and his chief of staff, Karie Murphy, in November 2017, alleging that Mr Prescott had made “unwanted sexual advances” towards her. The Sunday Times said the MP had told them she had heard of further historic allegations against Mr Prescott, reportedly made by two students. Im Trying (And Failing) To Become The Best Version Of Myself

Holly Riordan Updated June 4, 2019 By Marion Michele I’m actively trying to become the best version of myself but there are days when it feels like I’m only pretending I’ve made progress. There are days when it feels like I’ve mastered the art of acting like I’ve gotten better, but inside, everything is still a mess. The thing about toxic habits is they never really go away. You can fight against them for a while and they can get easier and easier to control — but if you’re thrown into the wrong situation, if you’re subjected to the wrong circumstances, then you can feel like you’ve been thrown right back to square one. You can feel lost again. Confused …

Trump’s family holiday to UK Disneyland makes for painful viewing | John Crace

With sketch writers banned from his press conference with Theresa May, I was forced to endure it on TV Monday Sometimes I worry I am more psychically connected to Tottenham Hotspur than is healthy. Having done my two events at the festival, I went back to the friends I was staying with to watch the Shoulder to shoulder with the president, negotiating a new trade deal. Instead, she cut a forlorn, diminished figure as she was both patronised and ignored by Trump, who made no secret that he was 75th anniversary commemorations profoundly moving, especially the handful of surviving veterans and letters from the dead. But theyve also generated some anger, because politicians may talk a good game about the …
