House of Commons Speaker John Bercow to stand down

London (CNN)John Bercow has announced that he will stand down as Speaker of the UK’s House of Commons by October 31 — the day Britain is set to leave the European Union — after a decade in the position. Opposition parties have said they will not back Johnson’s second bid for an election Monday, in order to avoid a no-deal Brexit, so it is likely Bercow will leave at the end of October. “Throughout my time as speaker I have sought to increase the relative authority of this legislature, for which I will make absolutely no apology to anyone, anywhere, at any time,” Bercow told MPs. “To deploy a perhaps dangerous phrase, I have also sought to be the backbenchers’ …

An iPhone 11 Pro? What to expect at Apple’s big event

New York (CNN Business)Apple (AAPL) will likely unveil new iPhones during a closely watched media event on Tuesday but don’t expect anything foldable, 5G capable or radically different from the year before. The decline came as the company grappled with consumers waiting longer to upgrade their smartphones and a trade war denting demand in China, once one of Apple’s most promising markets. If the rumors ahead of this year’s event are true, it may have a hard time reversing this concerning trend. “Apple tends to perform well when it changes the design of the iPhone in a drastic way,” said ABI Research analyst David McQueen, referencing the transition from the iPhone 5S to the iPhone 6. “However, it cannot do …

Argentina slaps controls on the peso as currency crisis grows

London (CNN Business)Argentina is taking desperate action to keep dollars in the country as it tries to prop up its collapsing currency and avoid defaulting on its debt for the third time since 2000. The currency crisis poses a huge risk to Argentina, which signed on to a $57 billion bailout with the International Monetary Fund last year. It previously defaulted on its debts in 2001 and 2014. Fears are rising that the country could default again, since Argentina has “significant exposure” to dollar-denominated obligations, according to Moody’s, which downgraded Argentina’s rating last week. “The government’s recent decision to delay repayment on short-term debt and stated intention of restructuring a portion of medium- and long-term debt signals mounting pressure on …
