USC admissions officials considered family potential to donate money, court filings say

(CNN)Internal admissions emails from the University of Southern California made public through a court filing reveal that family wealth was a factor in university enrollment discussions in recent years. Heinel, who was fired by USC in March, has pleaded not guilty to racketeering charges. Her attorney, Nina Marino, told the Los Angeles Times in a statement that the emails show “an aspect of USC admission that was directly linked to donations,” and said Heinel “did not create this system.” Singer pleaded guilty to four felonies related to the scandal. He has not yet been sentenced. CNN has also obtained the court filings, which include emails exchanged between USC college admissions personnel and parents of prospective students. Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste tells news outlets that six people were directly shot Friday and one person had a seizure shortly after the shooting at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, a city-owned venue hosting a game between LeFlore High School and Williamson High School. Battiste said the shooting stemmed from a fight, and the suspect pulled a gun and started “indiscriminately shooting.” “It’s not acceptable in our community, we won’t tolerate it,” he said. “We’re going to ask that the community help us by identifying those individuals that they know that bring this type of foolishness out to these type of events.” Some of the victims have been released from the hospital, but it is not clear how many. Investigators have reviewed …

Scores Of Accusers To Speak At Hearing After Epstein’s Death

The hearing Tuesday morning was scheduled last week by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, who presided over the case prosecutors brought against Epstein after the 66-year-old convicted felon was arrested July 6 after he arrived at a New Jersey airport from Paris. The judge set the hearing after prosecutors asked that he scrap charges against Epstein since the defendant is dead. Berman said he would give prosecutors, Epstein lawyers and any victims a chance to speak. Epstein had pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking charges and was held without bail, accused of sexually abusing women in the early 2000s at mansions in Manhattan and Florida. He also removed the acting director of the Bureau of Prisons from his position, placed …

Flu vaccine delays ‘likely’ in no-deal Brexit

The government said it was “working closely with vaccine suppliers to ensure they have robust contingencies in place”. “What we can see is we’re likely to not have enough flu vaccine, we are likely not to have the flu vaccine coverage that we’ve had in previous years, and that is likely to have an impact on the NHS,” Prof Andrew Goddard, president of the Royal College of Physicians, exclusively told Newsnight. In an open letter last week, Prof Goddard and other doctors’ leaders warned the prime minister about the risks of a no-deal Brexit. They said that the government’s “EU exit strategy must include provision for different flu scenarios”. The government is yet to respond to the letter. He said …

German soldiers won’t get new combat boots until 2022

(CNN)German soldiers will have to wait until 2022 to get new combat boots, in a setback that has angered politicians and raised questions about the readiness of the country’s military. The first pair of heavy combat boots had been given to 160,000 of 183,000 soldiers, the ministry added in a response to an inquiry by opposition parliamentarian Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. The delay was heavily criticized by a number of opposition lawmakers, who said the government had failed to adequately prepare the key NATO member’s military for combat — a charge that has frequently been levied against the defense ministry in recent years. “Boots are the key to everything,” Strack-Zimmermann told CNN. “You don’t go skiing with a pair of trainers and …

Dead birds in Massachusetts town prompt concerns they’re infected with deadly virus

Most birds infected with EEE don’t show any symptoms. (iStock) In humans, symptoms of EEE typically appear four to 10 days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito. Severe cases of the virus “begin with the sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills, and vomiting,” said the CDC, which noted, “the illness may then progress into disorientation, seizures, and coma.” One-third of those infected with EEE virus die, while survivors typically have “mild to severe brain damage.” There’s no specific treatment for the infection. “Antibiotics are not effective against viruses, and no effective antiviral drugs have been discovered,” the CDC said. “Severe illnesses are treated by supportive therapy, which may include hospitalization, respiratory support, IV fluids, and prevention …

The Kenyan school where the UK held Mau Mau rebels

In a school in central Kenya sits a small building that was once used by British colonial forces to torture detainees. A weather-beaten sign on the outside describing it as a “torture room” serves as a reminder of what it used to be, but 91-year-old Wambugu wa Nyingi does not need to be reminded. The tiny cell is one of several that were once on the site and in 1959 he spent three months in solitary confinement inside. With no proper bed and a bucket for a toilet in the corner of the 2.5m (8ft) by 2m room, he was not allowed to leave and was forbidden from communicating with anyone. What is now Mweru High School was 60 years …

Democrats Insist They Haven’t Been Wasting Time On Trump’s Tax Returns

The timing of the lawsuit is important because courts are slow and Democrats would like to win the case before Election Day 2020. It’s unclear if that’s going to be possible.  House Democrats filed their complaint in July, and last week they asked U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden to expedite the proceedings. The Trump administration responded that the Democrats themselves didn’t hurry before, so they can’t ask the court to hurry now.  According to a filing last week from the Justice Department and the president’s personal lawyers, the committee “showed no urgency” and offered “little to no explanation for its leisurely pace.” On Monday evening, Democrats disputed the idea that they’ve been slow, offering the fullest defense to date of their …
