Dallas police raid Catholic diocese properties in investigation of alleged sex abuse by clergy

(CNN)Dallas police searched the headquarters of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas and other properties Wednesday as part of the church’s widening sex abuse scandal, police and church officials said. The diocese said in a statement that Paredes and the other four priests who were the subjects of Wednesday’s search warrant were on a list of accused clergy that Bishop Edward Burns released in January. Burns said the diocese has been cooperating with investigators even before the list was made public. “We recognized throughout our collaboration with the police there are some who are not satisfied and want to look for themselves,” he said. “We know we have given them the files. California synagogue shooting suspect has not guilty plea entered in federal court

San Diego, California (CNN)A federal judge on Tuesday entered a not guilty plea for the 19-year-old California man who faces 109 civil rights and hate crimes charges in connection with a deadly shooting at a synagogue last month. Because there were 54 people in the synagogue when Earnest allegedly attacked, he faces 54 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and bodily injury and involving the attempt to kill. He also faces 54 hate crime counts, and another charge of damage to religious property in connection with the case of arson at the Escondido mosque. District urged school to investigate concerns it could become the next ‘Columbine’ months before Tuesday’s fatal shooting

(CNN)Five months before Tuesday’s fatal shooting at a Colorado charter school, a district official urged the school’s administration to investigate allegations of violence, sexual assault and campus bullying that an anonymous parent feared could lead to “a repeat of Columbine,” according to a school district letter obtained by CNN. “The concerns expressed by this individual are very serious and need to be looked into to the extent possible.
